The Rose Ensemble, a St. Paul-based choral group, asked us to help them redesign the visual presentation of its entire CD catalog. The Ensemble specializes in presenting interpretations of ancient vocal texts, so our design approach used graphics and typography from the era and region featured on each CD. With the generous support of the University of Minnesota's Design Insitute, Bill recruited a number of students from the "History of Type" class he teaches at the U of M to help research the letterforms and period art. Bill and his students used the extensive collection of ancient books and documents available at the U of M's James Ford Bell Library to discover historically accurate type treatments and graphic elements for each CD. We then developed a overarching graphic identity for the catalog based on features we found common to the varied period art and type treatments. |
